This tool was culled from an antique conservator/restorer's estate in Waterbury, CT. Though he specialized in horology he acquired and assessed all manners of tools and manufacturing equipment.
I have two
bench micrometer
s currently listed. Both were acquired in the early-80's, along with countless other tools and machines, from the former
Bulova Watch Factory
in Queens, NY.
I am more than a little mystified with the function this particular micrometer was enlisted for. Unlike your typical micrometer, the spindle and anvil are appended with what I describe as 'pincer' attachments. Their facing surfaces measure no wider than 0.50 mm. Furthermore, the spindle is set to stop at a position allowing approximately 0.10 mm clearance between the pincers (photo 4). At this position, the thimble is indexed at approximately 1.15 mm (photo 3).
Why? beats me.
My guess: QA enlisted this tool to assure a set tolerance for something extremely delicate, probably a spring. I do not know if technicians at The Bulova Factory repaired or assembled watches but the fact that this tool is indexed at a particular position indicates that it was intended to measure said part over and over again. Even by horological standards the degree of delicacy attributed to the 'pincer' surfaces, as well as the sensitivity of the ratchet knob (it will slip at the lightest provocation), indicates that this tool measured pieces a bit slighter than arbors or wheels. But what do I know? I trained as a bench watchmaker for one of the big luxury watch producers. That is, I was neither a watch-maker nor a watch-repairer but a parts-replacer. No offense to anyone that is self-employed / knows how to operate a lathe /  has worked on more-than-a-handful of movements.

-the base is approximately 11 cm long by 3.8 cm wide
-weighs approximately 1 lb 11 ozs.
-finished in fabulous Bulova green, with minor chipping
